History: This 20 year venture was the result of the dream of two small boys, watching races each Saturday night at Lancaster Speedway. Their hopes never based on financial costs or personal risks, the dream could become reality.
Troy Moseley, longtime owner/operator of Buford Truck Stop, hauled the first car into the driveway. Bulky and grossly heavy to be competitive, the white sheet metal was the start of Whitaker Racing. To the two small boys, it was a beauty, close to NASCAR special! Now they would be a part of the action from the pits, not the grandstands.
Every race team has a history, reflecting not just the events of the track. Most dirt-track teams are family and the good/bad of life follow the circuit of their lives as well. Roles change with time and desire creates the need for change. Fathers go from drivers to crew members, unclles go from chief mechanics to bystanders. Children grow up to take their places and racing continues as part of the history, expected. Two small boys who watched from the stands now build engines, manage their own destiny and control the cars around the dirt track.
With every season the memories of years before ride with every driver, spinning in the minds of every crew. For only a moment in time, this dream stopped. Kevin died and everyone on the team felt the loss. Always a caring child, his love was racing. His eager hands handled tools, cleaned thick, red mud away from tires, and always mangaged to smile, knowing that no matter how bad the damage, “my daddy can fix it.” The yearning to keep the dream alive was important...even if only for Kevin.
2003 is here and the team has grown. Jeff (”Dopey”) Bryson begins his second season in the Street Division. Lacking experience, his enthusiasm is high. He plans to be there at least 2-3 races per month. His goal is to continue to gain experience, having fun along the way. Look out for Jeff...#25.
Ryan returns in the Whitaker Racing #24. After notching his first two career wins in 2002, he looks to add to that total in 2003. His experience combines with a new ride for the 2003 season which should provide for lots of enjoyment in the heat of the race. Having picked up a new sponsor, “Pal-Med” medical supplies, his ride should be strong.
Chris serves as engine builder and Crew Chief for the team cars. He will drive several races just for fun and to ensure all the cars are at top performance for Lancaster’s 2003 season. His skill and love for “Chevys” will keep the team cars not just “showin” up on Saturday nights, but “in the race” as well. Racing is recreation, a sport, and every team relies on its crew. Gabe Hill, Wayne, and Buck return for the excitement and the hard work involved in putting on the show every Saturday night.
Long, cold winter is over; racing season is here! Strap on the helmet, drop the window net, and rev that engine. The aroma of racing fuel, the feel of thick, red clay, the sounds of engine power call out loud and strong. Let’s go RACING!
